Lab Process

Anonymity
To ensure impartial and unbiased results in diamond grading, IAG put in place highly structured processes to ensure a diamond’s anonymity throughout the diamond grading process.

Weights and Measures

Process01Diamonds are weighed on an electronic micro-balance that captures the carat weight of the diamond, accurate to the fifth decimal place.
An optical measuring device determines the diamond’s proportions, measurements and facet angles.

Grading Colour

A diamond’s colour is graded in a standardized viewing environment with colour graders submitting their independent opinions. The final colour grade given to a diamond is determined when there are sufficient agreeing opinions.

Grading Clarity & Finish

Process03IAG clarity grading is performed under 10x maginification under standard viewing conditions.

A preliminary grader views the diamond through every facet for inclusions and studies it carefully to asses the diamond’s clarity, polish and symmetry. The clarity characteristics are then plotted on a diagram that best represents the diamond’s shape and facet style.

To reascertain the diamond’s clarity, a second grader assesses the diamond again and performs all the same grading steps done by the previous grader and enters an independent opinion on its clarity, polish and symmetry.

Depending on the diamond’s quality and grading opinions, additional reviews may be required by more experienced staff gemologists.

Grading results are finalized when there are sufficient agreeing opinions.

Grading Cut

Process04IAG provides a cut quality grade only for standard round brilliant diamonds.

This final assessment of cut quality takes a diamond’s colour, clarity, proportion, polish, symmetry, brightness, fire, scintillation and weight ratio into consideration.

Inspection, Care & Handling Procedures

Process06At every step of the grading process, special care and handling processes are in place to ensure all diamonds retain their anonymity and are managed with utmost care.
